Federal Criminal Defense
Attorney West has profound knowledge of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and the Federal Rules of Evidence as well as an uncanny talent for effective direct and cross-examination, all of which have yielded desirable trial and appellate results.
In a recent matter, Mr. West negotiated effectively to obtain a below-guideline sentence in a federal fraud matter, description here.
In the following video:
RI criminal lawyer Claudia Gregoire, associate at George West & Associates explains the import of the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010, signed into law by Pres. Obama. The law changes crack cocaine sentencing and reduces the difference in sentencing between crack and powder cocaine offenders. The video also discusses whether the law applies retroactively to defendants whose cases are on appeal and have already been sentenced, or to those who have already pled guilty but have yet to be sentenced. The video is general information and one example of a 18:1 ratio for instance is not meant to be a real scenario. The example is used so that people can understand the concept of the crack/ powder ratio, but does not play out in reality that way.
