Naturalization
A wonderful and clear guide to the naturalization process and requirements may be found on the USCIS website. A helpful study guide of naturalization questions (on English and US History and Civics) is also on the USCIS site.
How do you know if you are eligible to apply for naturalization?
In order to send in your N-400 application for naturalization you must be at least 18 years old and have been a lawful permanent resident in this country for at least five years. You must have been physically present in the United States for the last 30 months and must show that you have been physically present in the state or district where you claim residence for the last three months.
Do you need to know the English language?
During your naturalization interview, you will be tested on your ability to speak, read, and write basic English. You should also be knowledgeable about U.S. government and civics. You will also be asked to take an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. If you have a medical disability preventing you from demonstrating knowledge of English or civics, you can apply for an exemption with Form N-648 which must be completed by your doctor.
Are you a man between the ages of 18-26?
If the answer is yes you must register for the Selective Service and provide proof of registration to USCIS. If you are between the ages of 26-31 you must provide proof that you registered with the Selective Service when you were required to do so. If you have not registered you must bring an explanation and a letter from the Selective Service.
What documents should you bring with you to the naturalization interview?
If you have been married, divorced, widowed, or had your name changed you should bring documents of proof. If you have ever been detained, arrested, or cited by the police you should bring documents showing the court disposition of the case. You should also bring any valid passports or travel documents, certified tax returns for the last five years, permanent resident card, state issued I.D., and two passport style photos.
What is the application fee?
$675 ($595 plus a biometrics fee of $80). If you are 75 years of age or older you are not charged a biometric fee so your fee total is $595. No fee is required for military applicants filing under Section 328 and 329 of the INA.
